Infertility is not the easiest thing to deal with. It is understandable for couples who have been trying to conceive for a long time to feel frustrated every time they see the pregnancy test come out negative, or worse, for the woman to miscarry. Thankfully, in vitro fertilization is a viable and accessible option for helping such couples maximize their chances at successful conception.
As the most trusted fertility clinic in Davao, we want to make sure our patients are well-informed about the details of IVF procedures, and just as importantly, the impact the treatment may have on them.
How will this affect us as a couple?
Typically, the experience of failed attempts at having kids will leave couples feeling a sense of loss and anxiety at the thought of “will we ever have children?” While infertility itself causes understandable distress, it’s important for couples to expect a certain level of emotional investment in its treatment as well.
As female patients will be prescribed medication to encourage ovulation, the effect it’s going to have on her hormonal levels are sure to impact her mood and feelings. The partner will, of course, have to take extra consideration during this time and put in extra effort into caring for his significant other.
Will the process result in only one child?
Because IVF facilities want to maximize the chances of pregnancy, it is typical for procedures to place more than one embryo in the woman’s uterus. There stands a good chance that only one embryo will successfully settle itself into the uterus. In the event that both embryos are able to successfully implant, then the couple will be welcoming a pair of twins.
If the couple wishes to have more children in the future via in vitro fertilization, they opt to have the remaining embryos frozen.
How long will IVF take?
The IVF procedure itself relatively does not take too long. After consultation and initial evaluation of each partner, ovarian stimulation will begin during which the woman will be given medication for 8-12 days. Thirty-six hours after the last injection of the stimulation medication, the eggs can already be harvested, cleaned, and prepared for intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
After the eggs are fertilized, they are left to culture and develop for a few days after which they will be transferred into the uterus. The whole process lasts about 3 weeks.
